Calgary's Top 5 CrossFit Gyms

With miles of pathways along river banks and creeks, Calgary is a great city to exercise in.  If CrossFit is part of your fitness routine, you’re sure to find a gym close to your Calgary home.

CrossFit has been around since it was developed in 2000.  Unlike a gym with weights and treadmills, CrossFit provides a workout for the entire body, combining the best of cardio, weights, core training and even some elements of gymnastics.  Often incorporated into a boot-camp style of workout, this high-intensity program offers a ton of variety and gives you the most bang for your buck.  Each 45 to 60-minute workout rarely gets boring.  CrossFit gyms are in large facilities, similar to a warehouse, with programs offered in a class setting. 

There are CrossFit “boxes” as they’re referred to all over Calgary. Finding the right gym in the right neighbourhood is key and many will offer a free one-time visit so that you can experience that particular facility and get acquainted with the coaching staff.

Here are a few of the highly-rated gyms in Calgary:

Reebok Crossfit Ramsay:  Located in the inner-city community of Ramsay, Reebok Crossfit Ramsay is located in a newer warehouse complex in the former site of the Calgary Stockyards.  Ramsay is a character community of older homes, luxury infills overlooking the city on Scotsman’s Hill and is semi-industrial in nature.  This gym is highly rated and is on the top of the list on Yelp.  The members of this modern 10,400 square foot facility include stay-at-home parents, professional athletes and former Olympians and includes people of all ages and sizes, including kids and 60-plus members looking to stay functionally fit.  It is kitted out with all the CrossFit equipment you’d expect – rings, barbells, ropes, medicine balls, pull up bars – you name it.   There are small change rooms, showers – just bring your towel. Parking is free and classes run 7 days a week.  

Bedrock Crossfit:  This gym is located in the North-East community of Highland Park, off McKnight Blvd NE to the west of Deerfoot Trail.  The perfect location for residents of Thorncliffe, Greenview, Highwood, Winston Heights and Huntington Hills. The gym is 3,720 square feet in size and they pride themselves on extreme personal attention.  All glasses are capped at 14 participants and the coaches get to know who you are, what your abilities are and if you stop showing up for class, they’ll come and find you.  In addition to professionally coached classes, Bedrock offers extra curricular events such as workout events, potluck meals and fitness workshops.

Crossfit Calgary:  This facility was one of the first CrossFit gyms in Calgary, located in the North West in the Crowfoot shopping district.  It serves residents of Ranchlands, Arbour Lake, Hawkwood, Scenic Acres, Silver Springs and Tuscany, just to name a few of the adjacent neighbourhoods.  They offer a variety of innovative programs, including a yoga-type mobility program.  Massage and nutrition counselling is available at the location.  There is a $25 drop in fee for those not interested in purchasing a membership.  Parking is free and there is an LRT station close by.

Crossfit Above All:  This centrally located gym is in Manchester, east of Macleod Trail on 42 Ave SE.  It’s not far from downtown and a great location in you live in the Calgary communities of Parkhill, Elboya, Riverdale, Britannia, or Windsor Park.  Classes start at 6:00 am with all-levels of fitness welcome.  Specialty classes run throughout the week for those keenly interested in weight lifting.  This gym has exceptional coaches who provide members with personal attention and Personal Training at an economical price.  

Crossfit 956:  This south-east CrossFit gym is located in Quarry Park, east of 18 St SE.  A great location if you live in Quarry Park or other nearby Calgary communities such as Riverbend, DouglasGlen/Douglas Dale or north in Lynwood or Ogden.  The gym in newly developed area in Quarry Park is 3,680 square feet in size and is fully equipped with a 54-foot custom rig, Olympic lifting platforms, a 350-square foot agility foam based turf area and a play room for children with child minding available for some classes.
