The new GoodLife Fitness Center has opened in the Bank of Montréal building in downtown Calgary. Now, people that work or live close to the downtown core can work out surrounded by limestone, Corinthian columns and natural light. This building on Stephen Avenue is the former home of the Bank of Montréal and has been sitting vacant for quite a while now.

This will be the flagship club for Calgary and one that will be welcomed by many Calgarians that have made New Year's resolutions this year to become fit and to lose weight. The CEO and founder of GoodLife Fitness, David Patchell-Evans, chose this building due to its fantastic location right in the heart of the business core.

It took more than a year to restore this historic building’s basement, main floor and mezzanine. GoodLife ensured that the decorative features such as the original chandeliers, the decorative moldings and the marble floors were protected. As well, the ceilings reaching 35 feet in height and decorated with 917 oz. of gold leaf and rosettes were preserved during the renovations.

It was a challenge to work with this heritage building so that it could accommodate a fitness club. Specific infrastructure requirements had to be met while at the same time conserving the building’s heritage elements. The company had to work along with the Alberta Ministry of Culture and Tourism and its Historic Resources and Management Branch to make sure that the floor would be able to handle the extra vibrations and weight that naturally accompany a fitness environment. As well, the fresh air and cooling systems needed to be replaced.

As the project proceeded, a number of decorative elements were uncovered. The team working on the project uncovered inlaid floors made of solid marble and ornamental plasterwork was cleaned and restored.

Welcome to the Calgary downtown community GoodLife Fitness club!
