8 Calgary Neighbourhoods with Amazing Views

There’s nothing like sitting on the deck of your home with a cup of coffee and looking out to the horizon.  What would you like to see on your horizon? Mountains to the west or the sparkling city skyline?  The river valley?  Fields of ripening canola or a deep, still forest?

Calgary is situated in a unique geographical area, caught between the prairie grasslands and the Foothills of the Rocky Mountains.  It’s where flat terrain meets rolling hills and valleys. The topography  provides the perfect opportunity to buy a home with a view in just about every quadrant of the city.  It depends what you’re looking for.

Here’s a quick scan of some of the many communities in Calgary where many homes have amazing views.

Mahogany:  This new community in the deep south east is still under construction.  The views in Mahogany are many.  All homes have lake access but homes surrounding each of the two lakes look out onto the water. Plus, homes along the perimeter of the community look east over ranch lands surrounding the south end of Calgary.  No doubt progress will swallow up these pastoral views but for at least the next decade, living on the edge of town will have its perks.

Crescent Heights:  Situated high on the escarpment above the Bow River just north of downtown, Crescent Heights is a community of new luxury infills, stately character homes and older bungalows.  Homes along the ridge look out over downtown Calgary and west towards the mountains. Calgarians flock to the look out over downtown to take wedding photos or to watch fireworks.  If you like city views, this is your neighbourhood.

Bridlewood:   This neighbourhood is 15 to 20 years old and is located in the South part of Calgary at approximately 162 Avenue SW.  The community is built on former pasture land, and is immediately north of Spruce Meadows Equestrian Centre across Highway 22X.  To the east, a look over the preserved natural wetland area and to the west, more views of the rolling Foothills and mountains beyond.

Woodbine:  This neighbourhood was constructed in the late 1970s, early 1980s on the northern edge of Fish Creek Provincial Park.  Homes along the ridge of the park look out over the lush valley with views to the west and some remarkable close-up views of Fish Creek wildlife.  That includes deer, bobcats, coyotes, moose and the occasional bear.

Discovery Ridge:  Moving a little further north, Discovery Ridge is a 18-year-old neighbourhood south of Highway 8 at approximately 69 Street SW. The majority of this very private neighbourhood is in the valley along the Elbow River west of the Weaselhead Natural Area.  The developers worked tirelessly when Discovery was built to preserve as many of the original fir trees as possible.  The work was worth it, with many residents in this upscale neighbourhood enjoying near cottage-like existence on the valley floor.

Altadore:  Built in the 1950s, this community is being thoroughly redeveloped with modern infill homes and duplexes.  It would appear that Altadore is built on completely flat land, and it is.  But a surprise view awaits on the eastern edge of the community where homes look out across a wonderful park and the Elbow River valley beyond.  This is where the river carves its way from the Glenmore Dam on its way to meet the Bow River.  The sun rise across the park is something to behold in Altadore.

Eau Claire:  This upscale inner-city community of townhomes and high-rise condos offers two types of views.  The pathway and parkland along the Bow River, including Prince’s Island or 360-degree views from anything above the 10th floor.  Depending on how you feel about heights, you can take your pick.

Edgemont:   Located in the North West part of Calgary, Edgemont is like the king of the castle when it comes to homes with a view to the south and west.  Edgemont is high on a hill, west of Calgary’s iconic Nose Hill Park and enjoys a similar altitude.  Every wonder who lives waaaaay up there?  It could be you.
